In the United States, over 15 % of all adults complain about severe headaches or migraines, with prevalence among women more than twice as high as among men. Interestingly, the prevalence of headaches among US adults is higher among younger people than those ages 65 years and older.

Some Common Headaches Include

First, let’s be clear that headaches are common, but they certainly are not normal. The reason why is because there is an underlying factor or reason why you are having headaches and it is essential you get to the source vs. living off of medication the rest of your life.

Some headache types include: cluster, stress, temporal, occipital, tension, allergy or hormonal related, caffeine or nutritionally related, migraine, or sinus.

How do Headaches Occur and What Causes Them?

If the headache is in your face, side of your head, back of your head, in your neck and shoulders, or in your jaw, this could be from posture, eye strain, stress, toxins, or pressure on your nerves that come out from your spine. In fact, this is one of the most common reasons why someone has migraines, or any type of headache. Pressure on the nerves from misalignment of your spine is called Subluxation.

When you have subluxation, this can lead to more problems such as postural distortions or severe spinal misalignment which can put tension and tightness on the spinal cord. Your spinal cord runs through the bones of your spine and it is a direct extension of your brain. So if you have pressure on your spinal cord, that can = pressure on your brain. Pressure on your brain sounds like a headache. Depending on the location of the headache pain is often times how it is labeled, whether it is face (sinus), on the sides of your head (temporal), in the back of your head (occipital) etc.

Chiropractic Science & Headaches

When there is misalignment of the spine or any of the individual bones in the spine, this can put pinching and pressure on the nerves that come out from the spine and a pinch nerve can then cause neck, low back pain, and/or headaches. When there is pressure on the nerves long enough, this can put pressure and tension on the spinal cord. The spinal cord is a direct extension of the brain. So when there is pressure on your spinal cord from your neck being misaligned, this can put pressure on your brain which sounds like a headache.

The goal of chiropractic care is to determine where you have misalignment and to correct it so it can take pressure off of your spinal cord and the nerves which can help with pressure on the brain and can help alleviate headache pain. This is powerful because chiropractic is about helping your body heal naturally versus putting expensive and harmful medications or botox into your body.

So what do chiropractors look for? Shifting or misalignment of the bones in the spine is called Subluxation. Chiropractors are the only trained doctors to detect and correct Subluxations, but Chiropractic care is so much more than just addressing your headaches.

When your spine is adjusted by a chiropractor, this takes pressure off of the nerves and your spinal cord that are causing your headaches. This in turn allows your body to start to heal. The body is amazing because it was designed to heal. If you cut your finger, the cut bleeds, but eventually over time, your body heals that cut. Not a band-aid or antibiotic ointment. These tools are to keep the cut clean which is important, but it is your body, in fact your nervous system that heals that cut.

Headaches and your nervous system: The nervous system is your brain, spinal cord, and all of the nerves that come out from it. When your nervous system is working at its optimal potential, then your body can function and heal at a higher level. You can put in all of the good nutrition in the world, expensive medications, or supplements, but if your body is not working right on the inside, you are only spinning your wheels. If you stop taking pain medication to address your headaches, the problem (headache) is still there.

However, if you are getting your spine adjusted for subluxation, this takes pressure off of your nervous system and the specific nerve being pinched causing your headaches and this allows your body to heal naturally without putting in toxic chemicals in your body.

Address the Cause of Your Headaches Sooner Than Later

If you do not correct the underlying cause of your headache pain, it can get worse leading to missed time from work or social time with loved ones. If however, your headaches go away from medication, understand that this is not a guaranteed fix as headaches usually come back. So the question is do you want to mask your headaches with medications or Botox, or would you rather get to the cause as to why you have headaches. There are other factors that need to be addressed along with analyzing your spine and posture to help your body heal from headaches. However, the first step is to determine what your spine looks like on the inside. To see if you have the proper spinal curves in your spine and where this is pressure on your spinal cord.
